The SFC EIS Growth Fund has been set up to capitalise on the early stage investment market by investing in companies in their “growth” phase, i.e. businesses that have recently come out of the “start up” phase by demonstrating significant commercial traction and fast growth, with potential for future capital appreciation.
This is Startup Funding Club’s first pure EIS Fund and is a collaboration between Enterprise Investment Partners (EIP) acting as Manager and Startup funding Club (SFC) acting as Investment Adviser. The Fund will focus on the “Scale up” market and will invest in a combination of companies, some of which were previously supported by SFC at the start-up stage, and some of which are new to SFC but fit their investment criteria.
SFC will be applying a number of investment criteria, the most important of which is the credibility and track record of the entrepreneurial team. They are also looking for scalability, businesses which solve a real need and which are disruptive and challenge the status quo. Finally, there needs to be a clear visible route to exit within a five year time frame. Since foundation five years ago, SFC have been involved in over 100 investments through their angel network and SEIS and EIS funds. Several of these investments are already showing substantial uplifts in value. Onfido, which delivers next-generation identity verification, was originally invested in by the SFC Angel Network in 2013. Its most recent funding round values the original investment at 70 x. BioEpic, which provides glucose monitoring via smartphones without the need for any blood samples, recently attracted major investment valuing the business at 40 x the original valuation invested in by the SFC SEIS Fund.
SFC have won three awards in less than two years: the “Lead Angel Syndicate of the Year” from the UKBAA 2016, the “Best Angel Syndicate” at the 2017 Growth Investor Awards and the “Best Rising Star” at the 2018 EIS Association Awards. This is further evidence of SFC’s central position in the early stage investment market and testament to their investment model, the quality of their deal flow and the strength of their angel network.
The Fund has recently made its first five investments: a 21st century flower delivery service; a luxury experiences business; a company providing non-plastic packaging solutions; a payment software business; and a next-generation battery charging business. The Fund will aim to provide a balanced portfolio of at least 10 investments for each investor.
